Charlestown Residence by Active Kitchens & Joinery

This Charlestown home, in the Lake Macquarie pocket of the Hunter region, is a study in restraint done well. Active Kitchens & Joinery, working out of their Cardiff workshop, built a curved American oak and stone island as the kitchen's centrepiece, then let three handle finishes carry the story through to the hallway and laundry.

The curve

The island is the first thing you notice. A waterfall stone benchtop rolls down into a curved oak panel underneath, a detail that takes real patience to get right on the tools. It sets the tone for the whole kitchen, soft lines, warm timber, and a full run of oak cabinetry.

Vesio Handle, Titanium

Beside the fridge, a single Vesio Handle in Titanium quietly sits. It is a quiet, dark note against the oak grain, doing the job of separating the pantry from the rest of the run without a single loud gesture.

Chicama Thin Wave Timber Handle

Down the hall, the joinery shifts to a long run of flat white wardrobes, each pair fitted with a Chicama Thin Wave Timber Handle in Clear Coated American Oak. Hand shaped in the Macedon Ranges, the gentle offset wave in each handle catches the light differently depending on where you are standing in the hall, and against the flat white doors it reads almost like a piece of joinery in its own right.

Vesio Handle, Brushed Gold

The laundry takes the palette somewhere else again. Sage green cabinetry, a green textured tile splashback, and a Vesio Handle in Brushed Gold on the tall storage door, paired with a brushed gold tap over the laundry sink. It is a small, confident departure from the rest of the home, and proof that one hardware range can carry three completely different moods.
